In 2022, the global shipment of battery for energy storage hit 142.7 GWh, a surge by 204.3% from 2021’s 46.9 GWh. The top 3 largest manufacturers each shipped more than 10 GWh, increasing multiple times compared with the previous year.
CATL, again, topped the spot as the leading battery manufacturer. The ranking for 2022 shuffled markedly from 2021, with Korean companies Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution dropping on the list, while their Chinese rivals including BYD, Eve Energy, Great Power and Gotion that had all shipped more than 2 GWh in 2021, saw shipment volume grow significantly in 2022. The up-and-coming manufacturers including REPT, HiTHIUM, and Narada were also ramping up production rapidly.
Such trend suggests that Korean manufacturers, which mainly produce NCM battery, enjoy limited benefits amid booming energy storage, whereas Chinese cell makers that use mainly square LFP battery experienced a surge in shipment, as standardization of battery for energy storage is under way.
