Japanese power supplier giant JERA, Electric Power Development Company, and Norwegian energy company Equinor announced on Sept. 9 that they have formed a consortium to jointly submit bids for the offshore wind projects in Akita Prefecture.

Auctions for the offshore wind projects, which will be built off the coast of Noshiro City, Mitane Town, Oga City, and Yurihonjo City, are scheduled to be held in the coming months. Results are likely to be announced at the end of 2021.

These offshore wind farms are expected to start commercial operation in 2025.

JERA offshore wind portfolio in 2020:

  • Jan. 15: JERA signed an MoU with Shimizu Cooperation for collaboration on offshore wind power generation business in Akit Prefecture and other regions.

  • March 9: JERA became the largest shareholder in Formosa 3, an offshore wind farm in Taiwan co-developed by Macquaire’s Green Investment Group and Germany energy developer EnBW.

  • June 22: JERA, French state-owned investment company ADEME Investissement and IDEOL have agreed to create an investment vehicle to develop floating offshore wind projects.

  • Aug. 24: JERA announced that it is planning to build an offshore wind farm off Ishikari Bay, Hokkaido, and has submitted its Planning Phase Environmental Impact Statement to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
